Do QR codes expire?

Short answer: a QR code itself never expires. A static code works forever. But many codes from "free" generators are dynamic, and those stop working when the company behind them switches them off.

Static codes: your data is in the pattern

A QR code is a pattern of squares that stores text. In a static code, that text is your actual link, WiFi details or contact card. A phone reads it straight from the pattern. No server is involved.

That is why a static code cannot expire. There is nothing to switch off. A code printed today will work in twenty years, as long as it is not damaged and the link inside still works.

A dynamic code stores a short link that belongs to the QR company, something like qr-company.example/abc123. When someone scans it, their phone goes to that company’s server first, and the server forwards them to your real link.

That lets you change where the code points after printing and count scans. But the code only works while that company keeps your short link running.

Why “free” codes stop working

Here is the trap. Some sites advertise a free QR code generator, but quietly make dynamic codes. The code works for a trial period. Then the site asks for a subscription, and if you do not pay, the short link stops forwarding. Your printed menus, flyers and signs now open an error page or an ad.

How to protect yourself

  • Use static codes for anything you print and do not need to change.
  • Before printing, scan the code and check the address it shows. It should be your own link.
  • If you need a dynamic code, read the terms. Find out what happens to your codes if you cancel.
  • Keep a copy of the real link behind every code you print.

All the free codes on this site are static. If you need editable codes, our Pro plan (launching soon) makes dynamic codes that keep working even after you cancel.

How long does a QR code last?

The printed pattern does not decay. A clean, well printed code can be scanned for decades. What decides its lifetime is what it points to:

  • Static code: works as long as your link works. If your website moves, the code follows the old address.
  • Dynamic code: works as long as the company keeps forwarding its short link. That usually means as long as you pay.

What to do with a code that stopped working

  1. Scan it and note the short link it shows.
  2. If you still have an account with the company, logging in or restarting the plan may switch it back on.
  3. If not, make a new static code that points straight to your page, and replace the printed copies, starting with the most visible ones.

Make a QR code that never expires

What should the code open?

Higher levels survive damage and logos but make the code denser.

Your image stays on your device. Adding a logo switches error correction to High.

Static code. Free forever. It never expires.

How to check if your QR code can expire

  1. Scan the code

Point your phone camera at it, but do not open the link yet. Look at the address it shows.

  2. Compare the address

If it shows your own website or exact link, the code is static. If it shows a short link on a QR company's domain, it is dynamic.

  3. Replace dynamic codes you do not control

If you are not paying for that service, make a static code with your real link and swap it in before the old one stops working.

Questions people ask

Can a static QR code stop working?

Only if the thing it points to stops working. If your website goes down or you change your WiFi password, the code will lead nowhere useful. The code itself never expires.

Are the codes on this site static?

Yes. Every free code here is static. Your data goes straight into the pattern, and nothing depends on our servers.

Why do some generators use dynamic codes?

Dynamic codes let you change the link after printing and count scans. They are useful, but they only work while the company keeps the redirect running, which usually means while you pay.

My code stopped working. Can I fix it without reprinting?

Only by getting the dynamic code switched back on, usually by paying the company that made it. Otherwise you need a new code.

How long does a QR code last?

A static code lasts as long as the print is readable and the link inside it works. A dynamic code lasts as long as the company behind it keeps its short link running for you.

How can I tell if a QR code has expired?

Scan it. A code that opens a page saying it is inactive, paused or needs an upgrade comes from a dynamic code whose plan ended. A static code never shows such a page.

What happens if a QR company shuts down?

Static codes keep working, because they do not need the company. Dynamic codes made with it stop, because their short links stop forwarding.

Do free QR codes expire?

Free static codes do not. Some "free" generators make dynamic codes with a trial period, and those can stop when the trial ends. Check whether the code shows your own link or a short link on their domain.
