QR code expired or deactivated? Here is what happened
The printed pattern cannot expire. What stops is the provider's short link inside it, usually because a free trial or subscription ended and the generator switched the redirect off. Scan the code, note the domain it opens, and you will know which company controls it and whether to pay, ask for help or reprint.

Why QR codes “expire”: the redirect, not the pattern
A QR code is a pattern that stores text. The pattern cannot wear out or time out. What can stop is what the text points to.
- Static code: the text is your real link. Nothing sits in between, so nothing can be switched off.
- Dynamic code: the text is a short link owned by a QR company. Their server forwards each scan to your page. If they stop forwarding, the code opens an error or upgrade page.
Many “free” generators make dynamic codes on a trial. QR Code Generator’s own blog says: “Many users create codes during a free trial. The codes deactivate automatically when the trial period finishes” (qr-code-generator.com, read 3 November 2026). Uniqode’s guide adds: “A dynamic QR Code stops working when the account owner lets the subscription lapse or pauses the campaign” (uniqode.com, read 3 November 2026).

How to find out which generator made your code
- Scan the code with your phone camera, but do not open the link yet.
- Read the address it shows. A short link on a QR company’s domain tells you who controls the code.
- If it opens a page, note the company name on the error or upgrade screen.
- Search your email for that company’s name to find the account you signed up with.
If the address is your own website, the code is static and has not expired. The problem is elsewhere (see below).
Your options: reactivate, redirect or reprint
Reactivate. If you can get into the original account, upgrading or restarting the plan usually switches the code back on. QR Code Generator’s support page says: “To reactivate Dynamic QR Codes that were deactivated when your free trial ended, first upgrade your account.” It also says: “It’s not possible to reactivate a QR Code by creating and upgrading a new account” (support.qr-code-generator.com, read 3 November 2026).
Ask for help. If you cannot get into the account, contact the provider’s support with the short link.
Reprint. If neither works, or you would rather not keep paying, make a new static code with your real link and replace the printed copies, starting with the most visible ones.
Quick fix for printed materials: a sticker
You do not always have to reprint everything. Print a new static code on a sticker and place it over the old one on menus, signs and flyers. Make the sticker cover the old code completely, so phones cannot pick up both. For restaurant menus, the menu QR code generator makes one in a minute.
Static codes cannot be deactivated
A static code holds your link in the pattern, so no company can switch it off. It keeps working as long as the link inside works. The trade-off is that you cannot change the link later. If you need that, see static vs dynamic QR codes.
Other reasons a code stops working
Not every dead code expired. Check these too:
- The page is gone. The website moved, a file was deleted or a form was closed.
- The code is damaged. Scratches, folds, glare or fading can stop phones reading it.
- It was printed too small or on a busy background.
Uniqode sums it up: “A QR Code that fails to scan has one of three causes: a problem with the code, a problem with the scanning device, or a problem with the destination it points to.” If the code will not scan at all, why won’t my QR code scan? walks through the fixes.
How to avoid this next time
- Use a static code for anything you print and do not need to change.
- Before printing, scan it and check the address is your own link.
- If you need a dynamic code, find out what happens when a trial or plan ends.
- Keep a list of the real link behind every printed code.
If you want an editable code that keeps working after you stop paying, QRNoExpire Pro codes keep redirecting to their last destination when you cancel. See the dynamic QR code generator or pricing.
